As soon as they brought us the SS, we have been smitten with the sports car sedan. It truly is like having your cake and getting to eat it as well. So you can imagine our delight when we heard that for the 2017 edition, Chevrolet is expected to add a supercharged 6.2 liter V8.
Underneath its subdued styling, it packs rear-wheel drive, a magnetic suspension, an available manual transmission, and a 6.2-liter LS3 V8. But what if instead of just a naturally-aspirated 415-horsepower LS3, you could get your SS with the supercharged 6.2-liter LSA that made 580 horses in the last-gen Camaro ZL1?
Rumors out of Australia point towards next year’s SS coming with a 6.2-liter LSA supercharged V8 tuned approximately like earlier Camaro ZL1 and Cadillac CTS-V models. An LSA would turn the already raucous 415-horse SS into something that could obliterate most other sports sedans in a straight line. The supercharged LSA delivers 580 hp in the Camaro ZL1 and 556 hp in the older CTS-V, so we’d expect power output to be somewhere in that range. In terms of acceleration times, 0-60 will probably come in about four seconds with the quarter-mile being knocked out in 12 seconds.
If this rumor turns out to be true, that could mean close to 600 horses hiding under the hood of a sports sedan some folks might confuse for a Malibu. This indeed could be a game changer.
